He says, God keeps you both; let the third child be quickly baptized, and go you without fail each Sunday into Sabbath prayer; and keep a solemn, quiet way among you (30). Hale tells the Proctors to try to appear more Christian so no one will question them and their faith. Compared to other characters such as Reverend Parr is and Abigail , Hale is not in it to help himself, and he is genuinely trying to help people. Reverend Hale arrives in Salem in response to Reverend Parrisrs cry for help and although some of the accusations he made may have ended up hurting people, he dedicates his life to his faith and helping people. In the middle and end of the play, we can see Reverend Halers naivety toward the court which later leads to internal conflict and severe consequences. Before Hale jumps to any conclusions, he goes to visit the Proctors to see for himself if he thinks they are innocent. He tells them, I am a stranger here, as you know. And in my ignorance, I find it hard to draw a clear opinion of them that come accused before the court (31). Hale is acknowledging the fact that his judgment may be clouded due to the bias of the people whom he is getting information from; therefore, he must make his own decisions. Hale is speaking to Proctor when Elizabeth is being taken away under the charge of witchcraft. Hale pleads, Charity, Proctor, CharityÃ¢â‚¬ what I have heard in her favor I will not fear to testify in court. God help me, I cannot judge her guilty nor innocent I know not. Only this considerÃ¢â‚¬ the world goes mad, and it profits nothing you should lay the cause to the vengeance of a little g irl (26). Hale believes that Goody Proctor will be released, but realizes he is wrong and the trust he has within the court fades. Francis Nurse is concerned about the future of his wife after she is charged with witchcraft, and Hale tells him the court make the right decision. He tells Nurse, Believe me, Mr. Nurse, if Rebecca Nurse be tainted, then nothings left to stop the whole green world from burning. Let you rest upon the justice of the court; the court will send her home, I know it (31). When Hale says this, it proves that he fully trusts the court. He thinks they will release the innocent and punish the guilty. Coming into Salem, Hale has full trust in the justice system and that they will do their job, however, as the trial progresses, he begins to realize that the court can have alternative motives. By looking at Reverend Hale at the end of Tthe Crucible, we can see the sincere guilt he has for the innocent people dying. The longer Hale is in Salem, the more aware he becomes of the corruption within the court. Hale is in the vestry room of the Meeting House where an examination is going on when Abigail pretends that Mary Warren, the Proctorrs maid, is sending sends a freezing wind through the courtroom and is sending her spirit out in the shape of a bird to hurt her. The judge believes Abigail and arrests Proctor and Corey. Hale is outraged by her obvious lies and even goes as far as to quit histhe job. He exclaims, I denounce these proceedings! I quit this court! (57). Hale devotes his life to his job and to quit and announce witchcraft as fraud proves he is a sincere and honest man. This is ironic because many of the other characters in the play do things solely to helping themselves, while Hale is just looking out for other people. After Hale has been gone for some time, he r eturns to Salem to try to fix what he feels as though it is his fault. He tells Danforth, Why, it is all simple. I come to do the Devil?s work. I come to counsel Christians they should belie themselves. There is blood on my head! Can you not see the blood on my head! (62). Hale feels responsible for the executions because as they expect in the situation, he feels culpable for the situation. After Proctor is arrested and sentenced to a hanging because of being found guilty, Hale tries to convince Goody Proctor to persuade John to confess, so he does not die. He tells Goody Proctor, I would save your husband?s life, for if he is taken I count myself his murderer. Do you understand me? (63). Hale wants so desperately for Proctor to confess because he blames himself and does not want another death on his hands. Hale believes too much in the honesty of the court and leads him to be guilty. After studying Reverend John Hale in depth, one can come to the conclusion that although he may have caused a few problems throughout the play, he still always had goodwill. Hale truly believed he was doing the right thing, but is easily manipulated. This is prevalent in our society, when one has too much faith in people, allowing them to be easily taken advantage of.

Surely if a loving God exists, such pain and suffering cannot be piled on so many people? Certain religions, such as Hinduism, go to great lengths to explain the suffering inflicted upon so many. It is a belief in Hinduism, and various other religions such as Buddhism and Sikhism, that our physical beings are just a shell for our soul, which is derived directly from God itself. This soul is reincarnated within various lifetimes, as punishment for our past sins. This means that the agony and pain undergone by so many is a direct result of our past actions, in previous lives, thus taking the absence of an intervention of God, out of the equation. The lack of a definitive answer however, leads individuals to lose faith in a God, and a religious system, as these questions eventually cannot be answered by anybody, all but leaving either a feeling of emptiness or content inside the person; as they either are satisfied with knowing theres nothing more to life, or are depressed by the thought that there is no meaning to their existence. Albert Schopenhauer, a philosopher in the 18th century rejected the idea of a God, and that suffering and loss is all of our own making, and not determined by a higher power. An existential crisis is in most cases triggered by a significant event which provokes a turning point in an individuals life. These can range from cases involving the loss of a loved one, to an individuals own sense of isolation and detachment from the modern world. Looking back on my own experience of being in the position of one who has lost faith and ultimately questioned the purpose of life, the ultimate answer is that each person must come to their own conclusion, and find their own path in life. For me, after going through the pain of unrequited love, I was lead to question God, and the reason why I had been going such heartache, while others around me were so happy, and for a period of time I felt isolated and found no reason strong enough to justify why human beings are here. For me, being brought up in a religious household, this was a radical way of thinking, and had no idea how to deal with it. My way of life had been threatened by a new way of thinking, and questioning whether all I believed in was a lie. Now I realize it was my lack underlying lack of faith which subsequently led me to question my existence and purpose on this earth. I discovered that the worst thing about questioning one selfs meaning and purpose, is that there is no definitive answer. The quest for meaning led me to research several philosophers and religious figures, including a prominent Indian philosopher, Swami Vivekananda. Swami Vivekananda enabled me to understand the meaning of our existence, by stating that human beings were like the bee who came to sip the honey, but found its feet stuck to the honey-pot, and could not get it away. Again and again we find ourselves in that state. That is the whole secret of existence. . This is further explained when he questions Why are we here? We came to sip the honey, and we find our hands and feet stuck to it3. This for me implies that human beings are never satisfied with what we have, and always seem to question more and more, without finding any satisfactory answer. The breakthroughs and discoveries in science further destroyed peoples ideas of a higher purpose, as it moved to dissolve the idea of a creator figure. Charles Darwin was a leading figure in challenging Creationism and the Great Chain of Being. His studies and new ideas such as Succession of types, Representative species, and the distribution of species were important in radically altering peoples outlook on life. His theory of evolution, ascertaining that man was essentially once a Neanderthal opposed the idea that we were created for a purpose. It challenged the idea that humanity was the center of the world, and that the hierarchy must be rejected, and that man is just a consequence of nature, which moved to dissolve many peoples belief in a higher power, thus leading them to query their existence, as Darwins theories suggested that we were not put on this planet for any specific reason by a God; we are just a consequence of natural selection and biology. Darwins theories were challenged by Karl Popper, a philosopher who claimed that scientific theories could be falsified and replaced. The problem with science however, is that it does not provide a moral code, or ascertain what is wrong and right to feel, leaving the individual in a quandary about what to believe. In conclusion, it can be said that a higher number of people fail to find meaning in their life, or at least question it at some point in their lifetime. This is due to a combination of a lack of faith in a God/religion , the emergence of science and Darwins theory of natural selection/ evolution and the consequence of suffering caused by events such as the Rwanda genocide and global AIDs crisis. The fundamental problem is that there is no definitive answer, and no solution to the questioning of an individuals purpose, leaving us to the only answer, that each individual must find their own path in life.

The Development of the Torpedo during World War I The year is 1942, and German U-boats are wreaking havoc on allied shipping to Britain; the vital lifeline which allows the island nation to survive. Unchallenged, they sink hundreds of the merchant vessels which carry the desperately needed food, arms, and other equipment that is necessary for Britain's survival. They are silent and deadly; undetected until it is too late. With a loud deafening blast, a torpedo impacts the center of a ship, breaking its back. The other ships try to run, as their crews search for the unseen attacker by the glow of the ship slipping under the water to her final resting place. Cries of terror pierce the sky, as a ghostly shadow is seen heading for the flagship. The ship rolls to the side as it turns as hard as it can. The torpedo misses, but a second blast pierces the sky, disabling the ship's rudder and propellers. Tracking the submarine with its sonar, a destroyer escort moves at full steam to counter the threat. Once over the spot where the submarine lurks, depth charges are shot over the railing, and they sink quietly in the water to bring the fight back to the concealed enemy. As each detonates, the water bulges over top of where they were dropped. Knowing when it has met its match, the German U-boat retreats and the battle is over until another day. The histories of many weapons of World War II are well known, such as that of the tank and the airplane. However the torpedo is one that is often talked about, yet its history remains in the shadow of these other well known weapons. In an effort to learn more about this topic, I interviewed my grandfather. During the war, he worked in a group developing the sonic controlled torpedo. For many years, he was not able to tell anyone what he did, including his parents. It was not until several years ago when he saw a documentary on the television which had a segment that described the development of the torpedo did he feel that he could talk about what he really did during the war. I first began by asking him what he did during the war. He told me that he led a group who was developing sonic controlled torpedoes, which were designed to follow sound made by a ship or a submarine's propeller.
